Nicolas G. Mize, Ed.D.

About

Dr. Mize has leadership and teaching experience at the school, district, and university levels with an emphasis in the areas of secondary school curriculum, instruction, and organizational change management.  He served the Los Angeles Unified School District for sixteen years as an administrator in the Division of Instruction (English Language Arts and Literacy specialist), continuation high school principal, secondary instructional coach, Gifted and Talented Education coordinator, and teacher. In addition, Dr. Mize co-authored district-wide English Language Arts curriculum, and co-designed and co-facilitated numerous district-wide professional development experiences for general education and special education teachers on such topics as curriculum implementation, instructional design aligned to secondary textbook adoptions, and writing instruction. 

Before joining the Graduate School of Education’s full-time faculty in 2020, Dr. Mize served as an adjunct faculty member at both California Lutheran University and California State University at Northridge. In the coming 2024-25 year, he will focus on the PASC/MA program preparing future school leaders, and has also co-taught in the the Ed.D. program in Educational Leadership (K-12). Dr. Mize also served as the university's coordinator for the California Administrator performance Assessment for four years.

In addition to his work at CLU, Dr. Mize served three years as a Professional Expert for the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence, one of the key state agencies charged with growing and strengthening California’s innovative System of Support for school districts. In that capacity, he co-authored four Systemic Instructional Reviews (SIRs) of Oakland Unified School District, Vallejo City Unified School District, Salinas Union High School District, and Mount Diablo Unified School District. In addition, he served as Lead Professional Expert supporting Oakland Unified School District for two years.

He has been published in Journal of Cases in Educational Administration and Journal of Educational Administration, and presented at University Council for Educational Administration's annual conference and co-presented at California Educational Research Association's Annual Conference. In 2022, he was awarded the Graduate School of Education's Teaching Award.
