The Language of the Self
Ullman Commons 100
People define themselves through their communications using cognitive processes like memory and thought. Forms of communication include speech and writing, as well as self-talk. With recent advances in linguistic analysis and neuro-imaging systems, the body of knowledge about language is expanding; however, theories from different disciplines appear to contradict. This study will evaluate how individual communications relate to one’s neurocognitive identity. Research will investigate theoretical models in philosophy of mind, neuroscience, communications theory, and sociolinguistics to synthesize an insightful analysis. The outcome of our study will help others better understand their own communications and therefore identities. Our presentation will include an introductory video, individual presentations from each discipline, and a panel discussion.
