What does the Writing Center mean to you?

No one writes alone, and everyone needs a reader's feedback on their writing. The Writing Center is a collaborative space where peers work together to strengthen writing skills and make learning more meaningful. Our peer consultants assist writers with any stage of the writing process — from brainstorming to making final edits — and we encourage clients to make appointments early in their writing process. Our consultants can help with any kind of writing, including class papers, presentations, group projects, resumes and cover letters, and creative writing work.

In addition to one-on-one appointments, we host workshops, social events and collaborative space to provide writers a place to learn about writing and develop their skills. The center can be used as a study space too. We have computer stations, comfortable chairs and lots of candy and free coffee to help you be productive. We provide these free services to anyone affiliated with the Cal Lutheran community.

Our Mission Statement 

Through research-based, theoretically-informed training and consulting practices, the Writing Center provides writing consultation and instructional support to all writers and fosters diverse written communication practices and multi-literacies in the Cal Lutheran community. Inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility are integral values at the center of our everyday practices that continue to shape our mission, guide our hiring and training, inform our pedagogy, engage our activity planning, and create our pedagogical space.

Our AI Statement 

The Writing Center acknowledges that generative AI is an emergent technology that is impacting writing pedagogies and students’ writing and communication strategies. 

In line with the Writing Center’s mission statement to foster diverse written communication practices and multi-literacies in the Cal Lutheran community, we believe that critical generative AI literacy is a subset of digital and media literacy, and our goal of assisting students with learning effective writing and communication strategies remains the priority. As such, we work with all writers who use generative AI as part of their writing process, and we welcome discussions about thoughtful, critical generative AI use and its impact on writers and writing.

Simultaneously, the Writing Center operates on the notion that there is high value in human-to-human connection in the writing process because writing is a social act and there is no substitute for collaborative learning. The intellectual growth that emerges through the act of writing, discussing that writing, and developing metacognitive strategies and skills in a peer-to-peer environment cannot be replaced. For this reason, we approach AI as a limited tool that may be useful to students’ writing process but may not be always nor necessarily appropriate to the student learning.
