Recorded April 13, 2021
What will be happening on campus if my student moves into the residence halls in the Fall?
We are excited and hopeful that life on campus will look a bit more familiar this coming fall. Parents, you will be allowed to help your students move in and get set up in their rooms. Additionally, Resident Assistants (RAs) will be doing in person programs and highlighting exciting opportunities such as study abroad, facilitating study skills workshops, hosting programs on equity and inclusion, and even bringing in faculty to talk about their research or special hobbies.. RA programs typically have food which is always a big draw for students. We expect that students will be able to visit with one another and connect in their halls and rooms much differently than this past year as well. With safety always at top of mind, this year we had to implement a pretty restrictive guest policy. If things continue in a positive direction, we are hopeful to loosen those restrictions this fall.
How many students to a room/suite?
Returning Students: For housing, our plan for fall is to return to a shared bedroom model. This means that your student will have one other person in their bedroom, and depending on where they live, two more in the suite. In Grace and Trinity, our junior and senior halls, students will have single bedrooms as they are designed that way. Each residence hall suite has a full bathroom for no more than four people to share.
Our returning students get to pick the room and hall they want to live in next year which is really exciting! All continuing students have received communication from us over the last several months about how to sign up for housing. Our room selection process known as Suite Selection started on April 15th and the application deadline was a few weeks ago.
If they do not participate in suite selection but still want to live on campus, we can still find them a room after the process is complete. It may not be in their preferred location with the roommates they want, but we will do our best to work with them.
We realize that some of your students will be arriving on campus for the first time this fall as sophomore students. Our staff is prepared to help with this unique transition and will be providing opportunities and assistance with living on campus for the first time. The RAs will give them tips on how to live with roommates and provide other opportunities to get them acclimated when they arrive.
If your student is looking to stay on campus this summer, we are offering summer housing in Trinity Hall. Trinity is our newest building, has single bedrooms and a full kitchen as well. If your student is taking classes, working on campus or wants to stay the full summer, the cost is reduced to $135/week.
When will I know if my student has housing for Fall?
First years and Transfers: Housing applications are due on May 31st and housing assignments will be released on August 2nd on your MyCLU portal. Prior to that, please make sure your student fills out the housing application completely and if there are changes they need to make, they will need to contact our office to do so. Once they submit their app, they cannot make the changes, but we definitely can through Residence Life. If they have someone they want to live with, please have them note that on the housing application. Both/all students must state that they want to live with each other. Once assignments are posted, if your student wants to request a change, they can do that by contacting us in the Residence Life Office. Students can also request a meal plan change anytime until the beginning of the semester.
What is the R.A.’s commitment to checking in on residential students?
Our RA’s have done 1:1 check in’s with students this past year as part of their programming. We expect to have that same model moving forward. This has definitely been a positive experience for our residents as they get to know who their RA is and know how to get in touch with them. RAs also conduct floor meetings at the beginning of the semester where they will share important community information.
What happens to my student if they have to quarantine or isolate?
Over the last 13+ months, we have relied on our local and state public health agencies as well as the CDC for guidance on how we operate during a pandemic in the residence halls. This means that we will still have space for isolation and quarantine on campus. Iso/Quar locations are full private suites. We have a Covid Care Coordinator who sends students a survey with menu choices for dining, questions about regular check ins from Counseling, Health Services, CARE and an option for care packages. Isolation is in one building and Quarantine in the other. Students are expected to follow instructions from Health Services and stay in their rooms. Rooms all have microwaves/mini fridges as well as essential items like hand soap, some toiletries and laundry detergent.
What if classes shift online and the university has to shut down?
It is important to know that since this pandemic started, we have had students living here on campus. Our priority is safety, but our students have a home here. We will continue to allow students to stay on campus as we have in the past even if classes shift to an online format.
For further information regarding Residential Life:
If your student still has questions, please have them reach out to us by email (reslife@callutheran.edu) or phone (805-493-3220) and we will be able to speak with them. In order for us to get the best information to your students, it is most helpful for students to contact us directly. Of course, we can speak with parents too, but we are able to talk more specifically with the student.
If you haven’t done so already, please follow Student Life on Instagram at @clustudentlife and on Facebook @Cal Lutheran Student Life. You can also find the full campus programming Events calendar at The Hub.

How do you use technology to connect with students to offer a valuable experience?
- We use all of the features of Zoom, e.g. incorporate backgrounds into the lesson, use breakout rooms for small discussion groups
- We give students agency by having them use Zoom, too, e.g. frequent screen sharing and presentations, liberal use of chat box
- We use apps like Kahoot for a more entertaining experience in class.
- Being interesting and entertaining are more important than ever. Incorporate physical props, like globe beach balls and puppets
What have you learned through the virtual environment that will enhance teaching when we are back in person?
- We use technology for group projects and moved everything into the cloud. Even after we are back in person, we will continue to use Google Slides instead of PowerPoint.
- We use technology for access to resources that otherwise would be inaccessible, e.g. guest lecturers
- We incorporate media sources that are more familiar to students, e.g. reddit, podcasts
- We have accelerated the use of a flipped classroom, with more lectures recorded and more in-person interaction.
Can you offer some general thoughts about the teaching and learning environment, the response Cal Lutheran has made to the changing tiers, and how faculty are working with it, etc.?
- The Center for Teaching and Learning was very helpful in providing technology and ideas for making a more interesting learning environment
- Information Technology Services set up some wonderful outdoor classrooms with big screen TV’s, digital whiteboards and 360 degree cameras
- The faculty worked closely together offering advice, tips and tricks.
Are athletics coming back in the Fall semester?
We are very excited for the fall semester and the return of athletics. We have been encouraged by what we have been able to do during the spring semester and love seeing the numbers trend in the right direction for a full return to athletics in the fall. Our current semester has been busy with all 22 sports in action in some fashion and a robust covid testing schedule where we have tested over 3000 athletes and staff. We saw very few cases and had no cancellations of games based on our athletes and staff test results.
Will there be COVID testing for athletes?
Our plan for the fall is to return to normal sport activities with more normal schedules and some competitive SCIAC play! We are monitoring regulations from the CDC, CA Higher Education, Ventura County, NCAA, and the SCIAC for testing and vaccination requirements, and will adjust accordingly for the fall.
Are any sports being cut this fall?
We expect to have all 22 sports return in the fall, and are excited to invite fans back as long as we continue to trend in the right direction.
For the most up to date information on schedules and what is coming up for athletics, check out our website at clusports.com and follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook at clusports.
Campus Safety – Will COVID testing be required in the Fall? Will students who are vaccinated still need to be tested?
Testing for Fall has not been determined. At this time, Summer Students and Summer Residential students will need to be tested, even if they have been fully vaccinated.
Where can I find the campus protocols for COVID?
