Hair Color, Gender, and Perceived Intelligence
Research shows that an individual’s hair color is often perceived to be an indicator of intelligence. Past studies have found that brunettes are perceived to be smarter than blondes. The present study explored whether blondes are perceived to be less intelligent than redheads as well and whether this finding holds for both men and women. In a 2 (hair color) x 2 (gender) complex experiment, undergraduates read a brief description of a person while viewing a photograph. Participants were randomly assigned to view either a male or a female who had either blonde or red hair. I hypothesized that hair color and gender will interact significantly such that female blondes will be perceived to be less intelligent than female redheads but that no difference will be found for men.
