The AmeriCorps Fellowship Program is a great kickstart for anyone looking to have an impact in underserved communities. I work as a tutor with the Safe Passage Youth Foundation, a gang intervention program for at-risk youth. Through this experience, I’ve been able to expand my patience and humility with children of color, as well as work on my Spanish while building community relationships. Working with marginalized communities can be heavysome, but low-income, impoverished communities of color deserve, at the very least, basic necessities not from pity, but because we are all fundamentally human.
