Hewlett Grant

Thanks to the generosity of the Hewlett Foundation, CLU established an endowment to encourage and support professional growth among the faculty, particularly to conduct and share original scholarship and creative work.

How much grant funding is available?

Grants are awarded in three categories:

  • $1,000 for research projects (excluding equipment)
  • $1,000 for domestic travel grants (North America – includes U.S., Canada, and Mexico)
  • $1,250 for international travel grants

The total number of awards varies annually based on endowment earnings. Applicants are only eligible for a total annual grant of $1,250. For example, an awardee who received a $1,000 award for research or domestic travel in the fall can apply for international travel in spring/summer, but will be limited to an additional $250. The award year runs from June 1 through May 31.

How can the funding be used?

Hewlett grants are awarded to faculty conducting original research or presenting their own original scholarly/creative work in the form of conference presentations, exhibitions, performances, or productions. The grant does not support the purchase of equipment or related purchases. Eligible expenses include:

  • Travel by the awardee for the presentation of scholarly/creative work in the form of conference presentations, exhibitions, performances, or productions.
  • Travel by the awardee for data collection or other activities directly related to a research project.
  • Performance/exhibit related costs, consumables, transcription/translation costs, graphics, participant incentives, and other costs that may vary by discipline for scholarly/creative work.
  • Costs of a seminar, course, workshop or apprenticeship costs to acquire knowledge or skills necessary for the project.
Who is eligible to apply?

Ranked faculty members are eligible to apply. According to the faculty handbook, ranked faculty are full-time or part-time employees of the University who have been appointed to one of the four regular academic ranks: instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. Priority will be given to full-time faculty. Adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible to apply.

What is the deadline for submission?

Applications are accepted three times per year. The deadlines are listed below. Expect an automated email confirmation that your application has been received. If you do not receive an automated confirmation e-mail within 72 hours of submitting your application, please contact the Awards Committee Chair at awards@CalLutheran.edu and request a confirmation.

  • September 1 (for activity between October 1 and February 28)
  • February 1 (for activity between March 1 and May 31)
  • May 1 (for activity between June 1 and September 30)

Note: Since, like all proposals, these applications promise future work, the application is ideally submitted before the work is done.  For example, if you are planning to travel to give a research presentation, you should apply for a Hewlett Grant before the travel occurs.  However, we recognize that unexpected opportunities sometimes arise so, in some cases, retroactive awards will be considered.

How can I apply?

Complete the online application.

How are the applications evaluated?

The Awards Committee will evaluate and award the grants based on the established criteria.

How will grant funds be distributed?

Grant funds are distributed only as reimbursement of real expenses incurred, and will be awarded in a one-time distribution after two conditions are met:

  1. The applicant files the required follow-up report online after activities are complete.
  2. The applicant completes a reimbursement form with necessary receipts, clearly marked as Hewlett expenses, and submits it to the Academic Affairs Budget Analyst.
How and when will I know if I have received the grant?

The Awards Committee chair will email you once your application has been reviewed.  Typically, this will be within a month of the deadline listed above. You may send any inquiries to awards@CalLutheran.edu.
