The Gift of Time: Extended Holiday Break

Dear Cal Lutheran Community,

I write this note to expand on the theme of recognition and gratitude that the Cabinet and I touched upon at last week’s Fall 2021 Town Hall. We remain grateful to all of the faculty and staff who have gone the extra mile for the university and the students we serve. Throughout the last twenty months, you served others while facing challenges in your own personal lives. As I see it, this is a demonstration of the ELCA value called “service to neighbor.” How poignant it is to see it in action.

While it is deeply fulfilling to serve our neighbors and promote the common good, it takes a personal and collective effort to do so. To both recognize that effort and to help you sustain it moving forward, I would like to give you the gift of time: time to connect with loved ones and replenish your own spirits and energies.

Working creatively together, Human Resources, the Cabinet, and I have figured out a way to undertake essential operations only, allowing for an elongated 2021 Holiday Break. This means the vast majority of faculty and staff can enjoy three (3) “President’s Extra Holidays” on December 20, 21, and 22. We will largely close all campuses Monday, December 20, 2021 through Friday, December 31, 2021. Staff will report back to work on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Granted, a small number of us will need to work some of that time. Alternative arrangements will be offered to those in this category.

As we approach the holiday season, let us celebrate the past year’s many accomplishments together at the annual Christmas Camaraderie party, December 10th (invitation and details forthcoming) and use the term break to heal, rest, and recharge.  Your perseverance through these long hard months and your dedication to the mission of  Cal Lutheran is acknowledged and appreciated.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday season.

With appreciation for all you do for Cal Lutheran and our students,

Lori E. Varlotta, Ph.D.
President

  • Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
    September 12, 2024

With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.

  • Grateful for You
    June 13, 2024

To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
