Eligibility, Hours, and Pay

If you are wondering whether you are eligible to work as a student employee, how many hours you are able to work, or how you will be paid, you've come to the right page.

Eligibility

Who is eligible for student employment?

Current students of California Lutheran University who are enrolled in the undergraduate program, Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals program, or graduate degree-seeking program and have established employment eligibility to work in the U.S. are eligible for student employment. Only students at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary are eligible for positions marked “PLTS.”

Note: Students who have graduated from undergraduate or graduate programs are generally not eligible for student employment.


To work on-campus, undergraduate and Professional students must:
  • Be enrolled at least part-time (6 units for undergraduate and 4 units for Professional) during the semester in which they are working
  • Have employment eligibility to work in the U.S.

For Summer Session: 

  • Students must be enrolled in the upcoming fall semester to continue working as student employees.
  • Recent graduates who are enrolled in a California Lutheran University graduate program may continue working as student employees over the summer.
  • Recent graduates who are not continuing in a California Lutheran University graduate program are not eligible to continue working as student employees after graduation. Departments wishing to retain graduating students for temporary summer employment must coordinate with Human Resources to hire them through the appropriate temporary staff employment process.
  • Incoming students may begin working on the first day of the fall semester.
To work on-campus, international students must:
  • Have an F-1 Visa
  • Obtain a social security card (see instructions on page 19)
  • Be enrolled at least part-time in an undergraduate or graduate program
Additional eligibility information for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA):

On June 15, 2012, it was announced by the Secretary of Homeland Security that certain people who arrived in the United States as children and who meet key guidelines may request for consideration of deferred action. Students who have been granted DACA will be issued an Employment Authorization card and a Social Security card. DACA students are eligible for any non-Federal Work Study funded positions.

Additional eligibility information for students on academic probation (Satisfactory Academic Progress):

*Students placed on academic probation must remain enrolled in half-time status. Students placed on financial aid suspension cannot work.

Financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) maintains a student must meet these three criteria:

  1. 2.00 cumulative GPA
  2. Completing 67% of all attempted coursework
  3. Be on pace to complete their degree program within 186 Units

Hours

All students, including international and graduate students, are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week when school is in session.

Students may work more than one job on campus, but the total amount may only be 20 hours per week maximum. Between semester break periods, when classes are not held, and during the week of Spring Break, student workers may work up to 40 hours per week.

Pay

As of January 1st, 2026: 
  • Student wage rates at Cal Lutheran are set to the current California Minimum Wage of $16.90 per hour.
  • Student wage rates in Westlake Village are set to the current Los Angeles County Minimum Wage of $17.28 per hour.
  • Student wage rates in Berkley are set to the current Berkeley County Minimum Wage of $18.67 per hour.
  • Graduate Assistantship wage rates are set at $18.00 per hour.
