English Department to Host First-Year Writing Exhibition at 2026 Festival of Scholars

The English Department and the Writing Center invite the CLU community to its first-ever First-Year Writing Program: Celebration of First-Year Writers at the 2026 year’s Festival of Scholars. This inaugural gathering will showcase the scholarly growth of first-year students through the ENGL 110/111 course sequence as they transition into college writing.

Dr. Scott Chiu, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Writing Center, highlights the importance of the event: “We witness it firsthand every day in the Writing Center. Our first-year writers bring curiosity, courage, and insight to their academic journeys. This celebration gives them a space to share their voices, reflect on their stories, and present themselves as emerging scholars in our community.”

This session will feature the announcement of the Koa Prize winners. The Koa Prize, endowed by CLU alum John Dillon,  recognizes outstanding academic writing from ENGL 111 students. The session will also feature the publication of the latest issue of the Gumby Writing Project by the Writing Center, showcasing students’ narratives about the stories they carry into their educational experiences.
