Dr. Scott Chiu publishes article

Dr. Chiu published "Unlearning and Relearning Writing Center Dynamics as a Faculty Director"

In his chapter, Dr. Chiu reflects on his transition from an international graduate student from Taiwan to a writing center director. He describes how the writing center functioned as a "safe house" and a linguistic "contact zone," reframing his status as a non-native English speaker from an academic deficit into a multilingual asset. By embracing his unique background and a non-confrontational approach, Dr. Chiu was able to preserve student agency and navigate complex cultural power dynamics. Ultimately, these formative experiences as a consultant lay the foundation for how he later navigates and rethinks power as a supervisor.

The book examines the unavoidable hierarchies of supervisory labor within writing centers, challenging the traditional self-image of pure horizontal collaboration. The collection argues that acknowledging managerial power and adopting reflective supervisory practices are essential for centering equity and justice in academic workplaces.
