Interviewing for Jobs

If you are invited for an interview, congratulations! Follow these basic steps to get ready.

Step 1: Prepare for your interview

Dress professionally just as you would for an internship or full-time position.

Step 2: Practice common questions

It is useful to review common questions and think about what you may say as an answer. Try your best to convey your relevant skill sets and state that you plan on staying in the position for at least one year.

Common questions:
  • Tell me about yourself?
  • What strengths would you bring to this position?
  • What relevant past work experience do you have?
  • What is your greatest weakness?
  • Why are you applying for this position?
  • Why do you want to work in this department specifically?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • If we were to hire you, how long do you plan on staying?
  • Tell me about a time you had an issue with a supervisor or coworker, how did you handle it?

Step 3: Send a thank you note

If possible, get their business cards for accurate email addresses. Within 1-2 business days, send a thank you note to everyone who interviewed you.

Try your best to avoid sending the same thank you email to each person if you interviewed with multiple people. Instead, it is best to personalize each one.

Sample thank you email

Subject: Application for student employee position

Dear ______:

I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to discuss my interest in and qualifications for the student position with you on Monday, October 15th. I am excited about the possibility of becoming a member of your team.

If you would like additional information regarding my background, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you again.
